Cape Ann Museum’s Saturday Showcase presents “An American Journey”

The Cape Ann Museum welcomes the Revels Repertory Company school touring ensemble to the Folly Cove Auditorium on Saturday, November 21, 2009. This event is free and open to the public. The program begins at 11:00 a.m. The ensemble will be performing a school version of their original musical theater production “An American Journey,” about immigration to Boston in the early 1900s.

Revels Rep is the touring ensemble of Revels, Inc. which presents the annual Christmas Revels and other seasonal celebrations in nine cities across the U.S. Founded in 1997 to expand Revels programs beyond the Boston area, Revels Rep performs at museums and community concert series throughout New England and in schools in the greater Boston area.

In the later 19th and early 20th centuries, successive waves of immigrants came to the United States from Europe. In “An American Journey,” the ensemble imagines a voyage to Ellis Island (and then to Boston) when Irish, Italians, and Eastern European Jews share stories, songs, and dances. The interactive performance inspires ongoing conversations about how a family’s ancestors came to America. As a student at a school performance said, “Now I know how they really felt.” The program includes audience participation and is appropriate for adults and children ages 5 and up.

Introduced in September 2005, Saturday Showcase is designed to bring parents and children into the Museum to share enriching experiences. The focus is on the visual and performing arts, with strong ties to Cape Ann. Painters, musicians, dancers, and storytellers are among the artists who have presented programs. Funding to support the Saturday Showcase series has been provided by The Goldhirsh Foundation.

The Cape Ann Museum is located at 27 Pleasant Street in Gloucester. Hours are Tuesday through Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and Sundays from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. The Museum is closed during the month of February, on Mondays, and on major holidays. Admission is $8.00 adults, $6.00 Cape Ann residents, seniors, and students. Children under 12 and Museum members are free. The Museum is wheelchair accessible. For more information please call: (978) 283-0455. Additional information can be found online at www.capeannmuseum.org.
